COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic - Wills

Here at Marshalls Solicitors in Plymouth, we are continuing to prepare wills for clients during the coronavirus stay at home restrictions. We realise that this is a worrying time for our clients and many will want to ensure that their affairs are in order, by making a will, whilst not wishing to leave their home or leave themselves at risk of contracting the coronavirus disease, Covid-19. This is particularly important if they are self- isolating or are being shielded.

Assisting a client to ‘execute’ (sign in front of witnesses) their will is classed as ‘key work’ by the government which means that solicitors can travel, if necessary, to assist their client  to make a valid will.

We can take instructions to prepare a will, by telephone or by Skype, Facetime, Zoom or similar online video meeting.

We will visit our client home, within Plymouth, to arrange for their will  to be signed, whilst maintaining social distancing. We do not go inside the home, to ensure everyone’s safety, but we can  arrange  for their will to be signed safely. There are several ways that this can be done. We always stay at least 2 metres from our client and from their witnesses to ensure everyone remains safe.

If required, we can also sign the will for our client,  if they authorise us to do so, providing that they are present when the will is signed (which might be from  inside their home on the other side of a closed window for example)  providing that there is at least one other witness. This might be because  they would prefer this or because it is essential because  they are being shielded for health reasons.

We do not charge for the time spent travelling to a client’s home providing that it is within a 20 miles radius of Plymouth.  All our wills are prepared by a fully qualified and insured solicitor.

If you would like us to prepare your will, please telephone (01752 254 555) or email us (denysemarshall@marshalls-solicitors.co.uk) and arrangements can be made without delay.
